Online shopping in Pakistan may soon face a major shake-up as the popular app Temu has come under the radar of regulators. Officials have confirmed that investigations are underway into the platform’s business practices and the impact it is having on consumers and local sellers.
The inquiry began after the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) raised concerns about how Temu operates in the country. Complaints received by the commission highlighted several issues, including doubts about the quality of products, the sale of fake or recycled items, limited return policies and the absence of reliable payment options such as cash on delivery. Local e-commerce businesses have also reported losing customers due to Temu’s aggressive market entry.
PTA has not announced any immediate restrictions, authorities are carefully reviewing whether the platform is complying with local rules. Another international shopping app, Shein, is also being examined, though officials say that complaints against it are far fewer compared to Temu.
For now, the government has not confirmed whether a ban will be imposed. Decisions are expected after consultations between relevant institutions in the coming days. Until then, millions of Pakistani online shoppers are waiting to see whether Temu will remain available or face suspension.
