Pakistan and US Set to Finalize Tariff Agreement in Ongoing Trade Talks

Pakistan and the United States have made progress in resolving long-standing trade issues, especially the tariffs introduced during Donald Trump’s presidency. These tariffs, which were as high as 29%, had created tension between the two countries. For now, the tariffs are on hold until July, giving both sides time to find a solution.

In a virtual meeting held on Monday, Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick discussed steps to improve trade and investment between the two nations. Both agreed that technical-level discussions should continue so that a final agreement can be reached soon.

The main goal is to remove or reduce the high tariffs, which have affected Pakistan’s exports. The talks are also focused on creating a more balanced trade relationship, where both countries benefit.

The United States is Pakistan’s largest export destination, with goods worth over $5 billion sent there every year. However, Pakistan also wants to increase its imports from the US in order to create a fairer trade balance.

This recent progress shows a positive shift in the trade relationship between the two countries. By continuing discussions and working toward a deal, both sides hope to boost economic ties, encourage investment, and support businesses on both ends.

Officials are hopeful that an agreement will be reached before the current pause on tariffs ends. This would be a welcome development for exporters, investors, and the broader economy of Pakistan.
