Pakistan Connects 1100MW Nuclear Power Plant to National Grid

On Friday, the 1,100 megawatt K-3 unit of the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant was successfully connected to the grid, setting the groundwork for commercial operation.

The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) announced that Unit-3 of the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant has been connected to the national grid for a trial period and that its power generating capacity will be gradually increased.

On February 21, the plant reached criticality and was undergoing several safety checks and procedures before being connected to the grid.

“The plant has been connected to the grid on a trial basis and is expected to be commissioned soon after reaching full power,” according to a PAEC statement.

Before the plant is officially opened, the trial run should last two to four weeks. It’s worth noting that K-3 is Pakistan’s second nuclear power plant (NPP), with a generation capacity of 1100 megawatts (MW), and its addition to the national grid would assist lower the country’s electricity tariffs.
