Pakistan Lifts Ban on Donkey Hide Exports, Allows Shipments from Gwadar Only

The Pakistani government has lifted its long-standing ban on donkey hide exports, but with strict regulations in place. Under the new policy, only companies operating in approved donkey slaughterhouses located within the Gwadar Free Zone will be allowed to export.

The ban was originally imposed in 2015 after fears that illeĀgal donkey meat was entering local markets. Authorities had acted to protect consumers and prevent misuse of the trade. Now, by limiting exports to a specific zone, the government aims to keep the process transparent and closely monitored.

Last year, the Senate confirmed that trade protocols with China were finalized, and donkey hides were included in those agreements. This recent decision seems to be a follow-up, opening the door for Pakistan to benefit economically while keeping the trade tightly controlled.

Officials have made it clear that only licensed companies will be allowed to participate, and violations of the rules could result in penalties or even the reinstatement of the ban. The government’s approach signals caution, ensuring exports happen in a legal and traceable manner.

While donkey hides may not be a common export item, this move highlights Pakistan’s willingness to explore new trade opportunities. With Gwadar positioned as the hub, authorities believe the industry can generate revenue while staying under strict oversight.
