According to the statement released by Miriam Garcia Ferrer-the European Commission trade representative, since Pakistan had failed to meet the conditions and requirements of Human Rights many times, they had warned Pakistan of the temporary suspension of their GSP+ (GSP PLUS) status if they continue doing the violation.
The GSP+ constitutes an extension of the GSP scheme that provides additional trade inducements to developing countries that are already gaining benefit from the GSP.
Miriam Garcia Ferrer added that “A temporary withdrawal of the GSP+ status is believed to be the last resort when all other means of political dialogue and engagement do not produce necessary results”.
She further said, “The EU continues to engage with the Govt of Pakistan to ensure compliance by Pakistan of its international commitments, in particular in the area of human rights”.
Since in April, a new resolution has been adopted by the European Parliament and due to growing laws in Pakistan that are considered to be biased against minorities and fundamental rights, that resolution has evaluated the qualification of Pakistan for the GSP+ status. Said the Ferrer.
