Pakistan on ‘Exceptionally High’ Flooding Alert

Pakistan has declared an “exceptionally high” flood alert after India released water from the Thein and Madhopur dams into the Ravi River. The sudden release of water has raised water levels, creating a serious flood risk across Punjab, including major cities like Lahore.

According to officials, more than 150,000 people have already been displaced as villages and low-lying areas face flooding. Emergency evacuations are taking place, and residents in vulnerable areas are being moved to safer locations. Authorities have set up temporary shelters to provide food, water, and medical aid to those affected.

The situation is especially alarming because three major rivers — Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej — are now experiencing medium to high flood levels. The heavy flow of water is putting pressure on embankments and increasing the chances of overflow into nearby communities.

The Pakistan Army has joined rescue and relief operations, deploying troops and boats to assist stranded families. Teams are working around the clock to relocate people and provide immediate help. Officials have advised the public to avoid traveling near rivers and follow safety instructions.

India, while confirming the release of water, stated that it had shared alerts with Pakistan on humanitarian grounds. However, the sudden inflow has made the flood situation more critical in Pakistan’s Punjab region.

Meteorologists warn that if rainfall continues in the coming days, the flood levels could rise further, leading to more evacuations. With thousands already displaced and farmland submerged, the authorities are calling this one of the most dangerous flood situations in recent years.
