Pakistan Railways Records 537 Accidents in Five Years

Between 2020 and 2025, Pakistan Railways reported a total of 537 accidents. Most of these were caused by unsafe level crossings, which remain a major safety issue across the country’s railway network.

Out of the total number of accidents, 313 led to either deaths or serious injuries. These numbers raise serious concerns about safety standards and highlight the urgent need for improvements in the system.

According to official data, Pakistan Railways operates around 40,750 train trips every year. On average, about 107 accidents occur annually during these operations. The year 2020 recorded the highest number of accidents, with 84 reported incidents.

The statistics reflect consistent safety challenges, especially in areas where railway tracks cross roads. Many of these level crossings lack proper gates, warning systems, or trained staff to manage them, making them dangerous for both vehicles and pedestrians.

Experts believe that poor maintenance, outdated infrastructure, and lack of investment in safety upgrades are major reasons behind these accidents. In many cases, signals and communication systems are either faulty or missing altogether.

To prevent further loss of life and damage to property, there is a growing demand for immediate reforms. These include modernizing railway crossings, installing automated barriers, training staff, and raising awareness among the public about railway safety.

Unless urgent steps are taken, the railway system will continue to pose serious risks to passengers and the general public. The numbers clearly show that improving railway safety should be a national priority.
