Pakistan Sounds the Alarm: National Climate Conference Calls for Urgent Public-Private Action

In a clarion call to confront Pakistan’s escalating climate crisis, the National Conference on Climate Challenges in Pakistan convened this week under the theme “Pakistan’s Final Warning: Climate Calamity or Collective Action.” Organized by leading private-sector climate innovator Weather Walay Pvt Ltd and agri-tech company Bakhabar Kissan Pvt Ltd, the event brought together senior policymakers, judges, bureaucrats, climate scientists, private-sector leaders, and prominent media anchors for a high-stakes dialogue on forging united, cross-sector responses to Pakistan’s growing climate threats.

Senator Sherry Rehman, Pakistan’s former Federal Minister for Climate Change, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, delivering a powerful keynote address that warned of an “existential emergency” confronting the nation. She emphasized the need for data-driven collaboration and public-private partnerships as Pakistan faces the fallout of an unpredictable climate.

The Senior Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Mr. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, attended as the Guest of Honor, underlining the constitutional and legal dimensions of climate justice and reinforcing the importance of institutional accountability in climate governance.

Held just ahead of the 2025 flood season, the conference aimed to break silos between government institutions, private-sector actors, and civil society. With vivid evidence of Pakistan’s vulnerability – from glacier melt and supercharged monsoons to firestorms and tennis-ball-sized hail – the event served as both a national warning and a blueprint for joint action.

Key outcomes included:

  • A shared commitment to develop a National Roadmap for Public-Private Collaboration in climate forecasting, risk communication, and disaster response.
  • Strong endorsement for the inclusion of media outreach, telecom channels and digital platforms to drive climate awareness and early warning dissemination.

The conference spotlighted the groundbreaking work of WeatherWalay and Bakhabar Kissan, which already serve millions of Pakistanis by translating complex climate data into life-saving insights for farmers and at-risk communities. These platforms exemplify how innovation and outreach can work hand in hand to protect lives and livelihoods.

In a powerful show of unity, all panellists and participants pledged to play their role in combating climate change, emphasizing that shared responsibility and coordinated action are the only paths forward. Participants echoed a singular, urgent message: in a nation where climate change transcends boundaries, no single institution can act alone.

“The age of fragmented response is over,” said Mr. Junaid Yamin, CEO, Weather Walay Pvt Ltd. “This conference is not just an event – it’s the beginning of a national movement.
