Pakistan Spends Over $4 Billion Every Year to Import Edible Oil Despite Having Resources Capacity

In spite of having potential resources and capabilities to be self sustainable in edible oil production, Pakistan spends more than $4 billion every year to import edible oil.

Pakistan is God gifted with suitable climate, soil and air for plants that could produce different oil seeds like sunflower, canola and olive oil. The country is producing less than 27% due to years of negligence and lack of expertise and facilities cease the industry from being sustainable.

Plain areas as well as mountainous areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Punjab province are suitable for olive plantation.

Apparently, there are 70million wild olive trees in the mountainous area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including its merged districts. People living there usually cut it down to manage their household I.e feed cattle and cook food.

The are unknown to the tree’s economic potential and it’s important for environment.

Protection from deforestation requires people to prevent existing ecosystem and plant more. Grafting millions of wild olive trees, which requires joining the upper part of plants so they grow together. Agricultural technique requires little efforts but could produce major dividends .
