Pakistan Targets$200 Million from Tuna Exports

Pakistan is expected to earn $200 million through tuna exports after receiving a 25,000-tonne fishing quota from the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). The quota includes two popular tuna species — Yellowfin and Skipjack — and is seen as a major step forward for the country’s seafood industry.

Maritime Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry described this development as a landmark achievement for Pakistan. He said it reflects the country’s commitment to responsible and sustainable fishing methods that protect marine life and help maintain the balance of ocean ecosystems.

To support this goal, Pakistan has introduced key reforms in the fisheries sector. These include the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy, which provides a roadmap for improving the industry. One of the major changes is the shift from traditional fishing methods to longline fishing. This method is known to reduce “bycatch,” which refers to catching unwanted sea creatures like turtles and dolphins by mistake.

The new quota will not only boost the country’s exports but also create new jobs and business opportunities for local fishermen, seafood processors, and exporters. It will also help Pakistan gain a stronger position in the global seafood market, where demand for tuna remains high.

Officials believe that with better policies and sustainable fishing practices, Pakistan’s marine sector can continue to grow and contribute more to the national economy.

This achievement highlights the importance of smart management, environmental care, and international cooperation in using natural resources wisely.
