Pakistan has recently assumed chairmanship of the Group of 77, the United Nations’ largest group of developing countries.
Pakistan was one of the group’s original members and has served as its chair three times. In December 2021, it was re-elected as chair of G77.
The opening section of the virtual handover ceremony, which was also attended by the outgoing Chair (Foreign Minister of the Republic of Guinea), the UN Secretary-General, and the President of the UN General Assembly, was presided over by Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi.
The foreign minister praised the G-77’s considerable contributions to advance developing countries’ economic and social goals in international development debates at the United Nations and beyond.
