Shahir Afridi, a police officer from southern Pakistan, won the Asian Boxing Federation middleweight title on Saturday.
Afridi, who serves in the Sindh Police Rapid Response Force, defeated Thailand’s Vachayan Khamon in an eight-round bout in Bangkok.
In a statement after the fight, Mushtaq Ahmed Mehar, Inspector General of Sindh Police, congratulated the champion and said he hoped the officer would “continue to shine the name of Sindh Police”.
“It is a point of pride for the Rapid Response Force, for Sindh Police and also a point of pride for Pakistan,” said Addendum Inspector of Sindh Police, Dr Amir Ahmed Sheikh, to Arab News.
Sheikh said that Sindh Police have always focused on the physical fitness of their staff and that is why their officers have won local and international competitions.
