Pakistani Pink Salt from Himalayas Light up China International Import Expo

Himalayan pink salt, primarily sourced from Pakistan, is one of the featured products at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) this year.

Pakistan is home to one of the largest salt deposits globally, extending over 209 kilometers in areas between Jhelum and Kohat districts. The Khewra Salt Mine in Jhelum is the world’s second-largest salt mine.

Pakistan exports approximately 400,000 tons of salt annually, and to protect its indigenous products from unauthorized use by other countries, Pakistan is planning to register its pink salt as a Geographical Indication (GI).

Data from the General Administration of Customs of China reveals that the export of Pakistani Himalayan pink salt to China reached $4,968,223 in 2021 and $5,747,492 in 2022, marking a year-on-year increase of 15.68 percent. This indicates a growing market and promising export prospects for pink salt to China.

In the first half of this year, Pakistani Himalayan pink salt exports to China amounted to $2,694,493, a slight decrease of 5 percent compared to $2,839,582 during the same period last year.
