Moosa Harraj, a Pakistani student studying for an MPhil in Economics at Oxford University, has been elected as the President of the Oxford Union for the Michaelmas Term in 2025. His win is significant because he is the first president of Pakistani origin from Punjab and only the fourth Pakistani ever to hold this prestigious position at the Oxford Union.
Moosa comes from a political family in Khanewal, a city in Punjab, Pakistan. His election victory was impressive, as he received 833 first-preference votes. His entire team, called the ‘Bridge’ team, also secured key positions in the election, showing strong support for his leadership.
The Oxford Union is one of the oldest and most respected debating societies in the world. Many famous politicians, leaders, and public figures have been part of it. Moosa’s achievement is not only a personal success but also adds to the proud history of Pakistani representation at this influential platform.
Moosa’s academic journey is equally remarkable. He started his education at Aitchison College in Lahore, one of Pakistan’s top schools. He then attended Charterhouse School in the UK, followed by studying at the London School of Economics (LSE) and Harvard University. In 2023, he joined Balliol College at Oxford University. His diverse educational background reflects his dedication to learning and growth.
Moosa’s accomplishment at the Oxford Union highlights the increasing impact of Pakistani students on the global stage. It also inspires other young students from Pakistan and around the world to aim high and pursue leadership roles in international institutions.
