Pakistan’s most popular car, the Suzuki Alto, has seen a major drop in sales, falling by nearly 75% compared to the same time last year. Experts say this decline is mainly due to higher car prices, increased taxes, and the reduced buying power of consumers. Even though the Alto has been the country’s best-selling car for many years, it now faces tough competition from imported used cars as well as new local models entering the market.
Looking at other car makers, Indus Motor Company Ltd (INDU) saw a smaller decline, with sales falling by 9% month-on-month to 3,337 units. This was because higher sales of the Fortuner and Hilux, which went up by 17% month-on-month, helped balance out the drop in Corolla, Yaris, and Corolla Cross, which fell 17% during the same period.
Pak Suzuki Motor Company Ltd (PSMC) experienced the biggest drop, with overall sales falling 72% month-on-month to 3,450 units. The sharpest declines were seen in the Alto, which fell 75%, and the Wagon R, which dropped 84%. Honda Atlas Cars (HCAR) also saw a 17% decline in sales, mainly due to a 33% decrease in Civic and City models. However, sales of BR-V and HR-V models grew significantly, rising more than three times compared to the previous month.
