PIA Employees to Get these Facilities Even After Retirement

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has taken a step to improve the welfare of its retired workforce by introducing a structured medical support system for former employees. The initiative is aimed at ensuring that retirees continue to receive healthcare assistance even after completing their service with the national airline.

Under the new arrangement, medical coverage for retired PIA staff will be handled through the State Life Insurance Company (SLIC). This system allows eligible retirees to receive treatment from hospitals and diagnostic laboratories that are officially registered with SLIC. The services include hospital admissions as well as laboratory tests, giving retirees access to a wide healthcare network.

To ensure smooth implementation, SLIC has shared clear written guidelines with retired employees. At the same time, hospitals and laboratories on the insurance panel have been formally informed about the new instructions so that retirees can receive services without unnecessary delays or confusion. PIA management has assured that laboratory services will be available across all authorized facilities within the insurance network.

This development comes at a time when PIA is undergoing major structural and ownership changes. The airline’s new majority owner, businessman Arif Habib, has repeatedly stated that employee welfare remains an important priority. He has emphasized that while future decisions will be performance-based, protecting workers’ rights and benefits remains part of the broader reform plan.

Arif Habib has also spoken about PIA’s long-term potential, pointing to its strong position in religious travel such as Hajj and Umrah operations, as well as the large overseas Pakistani population that travels frequently. According to him, these factors give PIA a natural advantage if managed effectively.

Currently, the Arif Habib Consortium holds a 75 percent stake in PIA after securing the privatization deal. While there is interest in acquiring the remaining shares, the owners have stated that a final decision will be made after a detailed review and business planning process.

For retired employees, the new medical facility plan is being seen as a reassuring move, offering continued support and recognition for their years of service to the airline.
