Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed Dr. Najeeb Ahmed Memon as the first Director General of the newly established Tax Policy Office (TPO).
This appointment marks an important reform in Pakistan’s tax system separating tax policy-making from revenue collection to improve efficiency and transparency.
The Tax Policy Office, working under the Finance Division, will focus on developing and evaluating tax policies, forecasting revenue, and managing Pakistan’s international tax commitments. Meanwhile, FBR will now handle only tax collection and enforcement.
This structural reform is a key step toward fulfilling Pakistan’s commitments to IMF and modernizing the country’s tax framework.
By dividing responsibilities between policy and administration, the government aims to create a more transparent, predictable, and effective tax system that supports economic stability and growth.
Dr. Najeeb Ahmed Memon brings over 20 years of experience in tax administration, policy planning, and financial management. His expertise is expected to help establish strong foundations for the TPO and ensure better coordination between fiscal policies and economic objectives.
He will serve as the Director General for a two-year term, during which the office will also work on digital transformation, broadening the tax base, and simplifying compliance for individuals and businesses.
This initiative reflects the government’s growing focus on reform-driven governance and long-term economic stability through fair and well-structured tax policies.
