Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed relevant authorities to take strict action against the smuggling and illegal hoarding of petroleum products, as the country continues to navigate ongoing fuel-related challenges. His directive comes amid concerns that such activities are worsening supply issues and placing additional pressure on consumers.
The instructions were issued during a high-level meeting held in Islamabad, where officials conducted a detailed review of the country’s fuel supply chain, stock levels, and distribution mechanisms. The government also assessed the impact of austerity measures introduced in response to rising regional tensions, particularly those involving Iran, which have contributed to uncertainty in energy markets.
Despite disruptions in global oil supply routes, especially around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, the prime minister made it clear that the government is not considering any immediate increase in fuel prices. He emphasized the need to shield the public from further financial strain while ensuring steady availability of petroleum products across the country.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to public welfare, the premier highlighted ongoing relief efforts aimed at supporting low-income segments of society. He noted that approximately Rs129 billion has already been disbursed under various initiatives to help ease the economic burden on vulnerable communities during this period of rising costs and uncertainty.
