There is growing speculation that the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) may move to Dubai. To address this and other concerns, the PSL Governing Council has called an urgent meeting scheduled for September 25.
Franchise owners have been expressing their dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in the PSL, prompting this meeting. This gathering will be the first under the chairmanship of Zaka Ashraf, who leads the PCB Management Committee. Reports suggest that franchise owners are frustrated with the slow management of PSL and lingering questions about the expenses incurred during PSL 8.
One major point of contention is the lack of consultation regarding the appointment of the PSL head. Additionally, concerns have arisen over the scheduling of the PSL window, which is set for February-March, as franchises were not included in the decision-making process for these dates.
PSL franchises are facing challenges due to overlapping with cricket leagues in the UAE and South Africa. Furthermore, franchise owners are worried that foreign cricketers might opt for other leagues, potentially impacting player availability for the PSL.
While the PCB has suggested relocating PSL 9 to Dubai, citing upcoming elections and local administrative costs, there is internal disagreement within the organization about changing the venue. Franchise owners argue that moving the PSL away from Pakistan at this time could have negative consequences.
The fate of PSL 9 and the potential relocation will be a central topic of discussion during the upcoming Governing Council meeting. Stakeholders will aim to address these pressing concerns and find a way forward for the league.
