The Punjab government has started a big project to restore seven historic forts in the Cholistan desert. Over Rs. 2.90 billion has been set aside for this initiative to protect and revive these ancient structures.
Fuad Hashim Rabbani, the Additional Chief Secretary of South Punjab, said that Rs. 1.89 billion has already been allocated in the current budget. The restoration work will begin with Derawar Fort, one of the most famous landmarks in the region.
The other forts included in the first phase of this restoration project are Jamgarh, Meergarh, Maujgarh, Deengarh, Phulra, and Marot. These forts have great historical and cultural importance and are expected to attract tourists once restored.
The government plans to add around 20 more forts to the project in the future, making it one of the largest heritage conservation efforts in the region.
This move aims not only to protect history but also to boost tourism and the local economy. Restoring these forts will create job opportunities, promote cultural awareness, and increase travel activity in South Punjab.
Officials believe that the project will help preserve the rich history of the Cholistan desert and highlight its importance on both national and international levels.
