The Punjab government has announced free public transport for students, senior citizens, and differently-abled individuals across the province. This decision aims to make travel easier for these groups and improve accessibility to public transport services.
The approval came during a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. Alongside this initiative, the Chief Minister directed authorities to implement measures to lower chicken prices in the province.
In efforts to strengthen law enforcement, the government has approved the establishment of specialized investigation units focused on handling cases of sexual crimes. These units will work on preventing such incidents and ensuring justice for victims.
The meeting also discussed major infrastructure developments, including plans to construct new airports in Bhakkar and Bahawalnagar. Additionally, funds were allocated for an airstrip in Bhakkar to support air ambulance services, improving emergency medical transportation in remote areas.
A proposal to launch Punjab’s own airline was also reviewed. In the education sector, the government has decided to collaborate with the World Bank to introduce a student grading system.
To enforce stricter regulations, the cabinet approved an increase in penalties for violations of the Punjab Fertilizer Control Act and the Punjab Arms Ordinance. These measures aim to curb illegal weapons and ensure compliance with agricultural standards.
In a step to ease bureaucratic procedures, birth and death registration certificate fees have been waived for one year. Legal aid services will also be expanded to assist underprivileged citizens.
The government has also ensured job opportunities for 664 visually impaired individuals by offering them employment on daily wages. Additionally, 3,904 new positions have been created in the Punjab Crime Control Department to enhance public safety.
The meeting also highlighted cooperation with Chengdu, China, and discussed the ICT Hub project in Punjab. Environmental efforts were also prioritized with the approval of the Green Pakistan Initiative’s “Lining of Watercourses in Cholistan” project.
Speaking at the meeting, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif reaffirmed Punjab’s commitment to equitable development and dismissed concerns regarding water disputes with other provinces.
