Thirty thousand government jobs were cut due to instructions from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). A meeting of the assembly, led by Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, began an hour and five minutes later than scheduled.
During the session, Minister Pir Kazim Pirzada spoke about issues with the Irrigation Department. He explained that the canal system, which is over 100 years old, was originally built to supply water to 67% of the land. However, it currently provides only 1,000 cusecs of water, while 1,300 cusecs are needed.
Engineers have warned that if the canal system is used at full capacity, it could lead to dangerous breaches. Despite the economic challenges the country is facing, the minister promised that necessary repairs to the canal system would be finished by the 2025-26 timeframe.
The situation highlights both the impact of international financial policies on local employment and the ongoing struggle to maintain vital infrastructure in difficult economic times.
