Punjab Govt Imposes Ban on Cutting of Forests, Auctioning of Timber

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced a strict and immediate ban on cutting down trees in forests and on the auctioning of timber anywhere in the province. The decision, shared on Wednesday, puts a complete stop to the traditional timber auction system that has been in place for decades. The move comes as part of the government’s efforts to protect Punjab’s forests and stop the rapid deforestation that has been harming the environment.

Along with this ban, the Chief Minister has instructed officials to create a modern and transparent system for forest management. She emphasized the use of advanced tools such as digital mapping and technology to closely monitor forests, track illegal logging, and ensure better care of natural resources. This, she said, will help build a system that is more sustainable and long-lasting.

Officials explained that the new measures are not just about banning tree cutting but about creating a balance between development and environmental protection. The government’s aim is to reduce the dangerous effects of climate change, safeguard natural resources, and make sure future generations can benefit from Punjab’s green cover.

The initiative has been described as a significant step forward in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable forestry practices in the province.
