The Government of Punjab is considering a new work-from-home model for office employees as part of efforts to reduce expenses and improve efficiency. Under the proposed plan, around 50 percent of staff would work remotely while the rest attend the office on a rotational basis.
According to initial details, employees may be required to come to the office only two days a week. Offices could remain closed from Friday to Sunday, creating a four-day workweek. Staff would be divided into two groups to ensure that essential work continues without interruption while reducing the number of people present at one time.
The main goal of this proposal is to cut operational costs, especially electricity and maintenance expenses. With fewer employees in offices each day, the government expects to save energy and manage resources more effectively. It may also help reduce traffic congestion in major cities and lower fuel consumption.
Officials believe the model could improve productivity by offering employees more flexibility and better work-life balance. However, some experts say proper planning and digital systems will be necessary to ensure smooth communication and workflow between remote and on-site staff.
If approved, this plan could mark a major shift in how government offices operate in Punjab. It reflects a growing trend toward flexible work arrangements, which became more common worldwide after the COVID-19 pandemic. Further details are expected once the proposal is finalized.
