Punjab Govt to Promote Punjabi Language in Schools

The Punjab government has launched a new programme to promote the Punjabi language, its literature, and polite speaking habits in all public schools across the province.

The aim is to help students understand their cultural roots, speak respectfully, and appreciate the richness of local languages.

As part of this initiative, schools have been instructed to teach students how to use polite Punjabi expressions such as “Tusi” (you) and “Assi” (we).

Teachers have been told to guide children away from using informal or disrespectful language, especially in school settings. Officials say developing polite communication skills at a young age will help students build confidence and show respect in everyday conversations.

The programme does not focus only on Punjabi. It also recognises the importance of Saraiki and Pothohari, languages spoken in the southern and northern parts of Punjab. The government wants students from all regions to feel connected to their local identity and proud of their linguistic heritage.

To support this goal, headteachers have been asked to organise different activities in local languages, such as storytelling, speeches, poetry recitations, and short dialogues.

Schools will also record videos of students speaking Punjabi or other regional languages and share them with the education department as part of the programme’s progress report.

Education officials believe this initiative will help revive interest in local languages among the younger generation. They hope it will encourage children to use polite and culturally rich expressions at home and in school.

The government expects that promoting regional languages will strengthen cultural understanding, improve communication skills, and create a stronger sense of identity among students across Punjab.
