Samsung could soon challenge Sony’s long-time control over iPhone camera sensors. Well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported that Apple may use a 48MP ultrawide camera sensor made by Samsung in the iPhone 18, which is expected to launch in 2026.
If this happens, it would be a big change because Sony has been the main supplier of camera sensors for iPhones for many years. The new sensor is said to be 1/2.6-inch in size, similar to current ultrawide sensors, but it may still offer better image quality and sharper details thanks to Samsung’s improved technology.
To prepare for this opportunity, Samsung’s System LSI division has reportedly created a special team focused on meeting Apple’s strict quality and performance standards. This shows how serious Samsung is about entering Apple’s supply chain and competing directly with Sony in this space.
At the same time, Samsung is also working on its own flagship devices. The upcoming Galaxy S25 Ultra is rumored to bring major camera improvements, which could further increase competition in the premium smartphone market. With both companies pushing for better camera performance, users can expect more innovation and higher-quality photography features in future smartphones.
If Samsung successfully supplies camera sensors for the iPhone, it could reshape the balance of power in the smartphone component industry and mark a new chapter in the rivalry between major tech giants.
