The newly built Nawaz Sharif Flyover in Rawalpindi, located at Khawaja Corporation Chowk on Adiala Road, has been opened for traffic. Although the official inauguration by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has been delayed, the flyover is already in use by the public.
This flyover is a major part of a larger infrastructure project worth Rs. 4.38 billion. The entire plan includes the construction of two underpasses and a pedestrian walkway along Mall Road. The flyover itself cost Rs. 2.3 billion to build and aims to reduce traffic congestion in one of Rawalpindi’s busiest areas.
Commuters have welcomed the opening, as it is expected to make daily travel easier and reduce waiting times at the busy chowk. However, the underpasses included in the project remain closed and will only be opened after the official launch event.
Local authorities say that while the flyover was urgently needed and completed on time, the formal inauguration ceremony was delayed due to scheduling issues. Still, they decided to open the flyover early for public convenience.
The full benefits of the project will be seen once all parts, including the underpasses and pedestrian path, are open and functional. This project is part of Punjab’s broader efforts to modernize infrastructure, ease traffic flow, and improve road safety in urban areas.
Citizens are hopeful that the remaining parts of the project will be completed and opened soon, bringing further relief to Rawalpindi’s heavy traffic zones.
