Rs. 9 Crore Car Purchased for Chairman Senate from Public Funds

Pakistan’s Senate Chairman, Yousuf Raza Gilani, has confirmed that a luxury car valued at around Rs90 million was purchased for him using the Senate’s budget. The vehicle, which was ordered in May of last year using savings from the previous fiscal year, has now arrived at the Senate Secretariat.

Gilani stated that he had offered to return the car due to the country’s difficult economic situation, but by the time the matter was addressed, the vehicle had already been delivered. His comments come amid growing public scrutiny over government expenditures during a time of economic hardship for many citizens.

The issue has drawn further attention after it was disclosed in Parliament that the monthly salaries of both the Senate chairman and the National Assembly speaker are approximately Rs2.15 million. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif criticized such spending, describing it as “economic obscenity” in light of the nation’s financial challenges.

The purchase of the high-value vehicle has sparked debate across the country, with critics questioning the government’s spending priorities and its commitment to austerity, while supporters argue that official vehicles are customary for officeholders to perform their duties.
