Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is expected to take over as the head coach of Pakistan’s Test team.
The position has been vacant since October 2025, when Azhar Mahmood served as interim coach. Officials are now preparing to appoint Sarfaraz to lead the red-ball side on a full-time basis.
He is likely to begin his coaching role during the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh in May. The series will be part of the ICC World Test Championship 2027 cycle, making it an important assignment for the national team.
In recent years, Sarfaraz has remained closely involved in Pakistan’s cricket system. He has worked with youth and development squads, including mentoring the Under-19 team that won the Asia Cup.
He has also been associated with Pakistan Shaheens during their tours in the United Arab Emirates, helping young players improve their skills and gain international experience.
As a player, Sarfaraz represented Pakistan in 54 Test matches, 117 One Day Internationals, and 61 T20 Internationals. He is best remembered for leading Pakistan to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017, a historic achievement for the country.
If confirmed as head coach, Sarfaraz is expected to bring strong leadership experience and deep knowledge of the team environment, aiming to rebuild consistency and improve Pakistan’s performance in Test cricket.
