AST SpaceMobile, in collaboration with Vodafone, Rakuten, and AT&T, has made history by making the first-ever space-based voice call using an unaltered smartphone.
The milestone was achieved with the help of a satellite in low-Earth orbit, which facilitated a two-way phone call. This achievement represents the start of AST SpaceMobile’s mission to offer space-based connectivity to the nearly 50% of the world’s population who lack access to cellular broadband.
“Achieving what many once considered impossible, we have reached the most significant milestone to date in our quest to deliver global cellular broadband from space,” said AST SpaceMobile chief executive Abel Avellan.
