Senate Approves Bill to Limit Chief Justice Suo Moto Powers

After loud objections from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf members, the Senate on Thursday passed the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023, which aims to limit the top judge’s suo motu powers in a personal capacity.

Azam Nazir Tarar, the federal law minister, introduced the measure in the Senate. By a margin of 60-19, the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Bill 2023 was approved.

During the approval of the law, PTI senators gathered near to the chairman’s platform and continued screaming anti-government and anti-bill chants as a sign of protest and rejection.

Moreover, the senators tore up copies of the measure.
