The Sindh Education Department has announced a ban on giving traditional gifts like Ajrak, Sindhi topi, and other items during official ceremonies. A formal notice was issued from Karachi on May 27, 2025, outlining the new policy.
According to the notification, students will no longer be allowed to welcome guests at government events. The department stated that this move is meant to avoid unnecessary formalities and create a more uniform and simple approach to public events in the education sector.
The aim is to ensure that government functions remain focused and efficient, rather than spending time and resources on ceremonies that include gift-giving or student participation in welcoming guests. The decision is also seen as a step toward reducing the burden on students and school staff during official visits and programs.
All education officers, principals, and staff working in public schools have been instructed to follow this new policy immediately. The department has clearly mentioned that the rules will apply to all future events held in government schools and offices under the education department.
The decision has received mixed reactions from the public. While some believe it will help simplify government events and save time and money, others feel it may affect cultural representation, especially the practice of giving Ajrak and Sindhi topi, which are symbols of Sindh’s heritage.
Still, the department remains firm on implementing the policy and expects full cooperation from schools and officials across the province.
