Sindh Govt Launches Rs. 182 Billion Water Infrastructure Project for Power Plants

The Chief Minister of Sindh, Murad Ali Shah, has laid the foundation stone of an 182.3 billion water infrastructure project that would provide water to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) committed to generating 1650 megawatts of energy through coal-firing in Thar Block-I.  

It was revealed by him that this project would be the first in the country that would be carried out by a public-private partnership in Thar and would attract foreign direct investment (FDI).  

The ceremony was held at Nabirsar, near Umerkot. Numerous officials graced the ceremony, which included Provincial Minister for Energy Imtiaz Sheikh, Education Minister Syed Sardar Shah, Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro, MNA’s like Mir Munawar Talpur, Dr Mahesh Malani, Chief Minister Special Assistant on Investment Syed Qasim Naveed, Consulate General of Kuwait Salim Yusif Al Hamdan, CEO of Enter Tech Holding Company Abdullah Al Mutairi, CEO of Enertech Water Private Limited, Yaser Malik, Chairman Pakistan Kuwait Investment Company Mohammed Al Fares, and numerous local notables.

The Sindh government has been seeking investment in laying the water infrastructure for IPP’s in Block-I of Thar that would ultimately be able to produce 1650 MW of energy.

The Chief Minister also added that a canal would be required to be built in order to carry water from Farsh X-regulator to Nabisar at a discharge of 200 cusecs of water.  

He further elaborated that 45 cusecs of the 200 cusecs would be provided to IPPs of Thar Coal Block-I, and the remaining 155 cusecs would allow water to reach Nabirsar for agricultural purposes.

The Chief Minister mentioned that as the cost of the project is significant as well as the deadline set with the IPPs, the Sindh Cabinet had made a decision to carry out this project through the PPP mode.
