The Sindh government intends to replace the Kalashnikov with a 9mm pistol as the issue weapon for Karachi police officers.
In this regard, the home department plans to purchase 7,000 Turkish 9mm pistols in the near future. More than Rs620 million would be spent on the project.
The provincial cabinet has also relaxed the SPPRA norms at the request of Sindh IG Mushtaq Mehar.
In 2019, Amal, a 10-year-old girl, was killed during a police engagement in Defence. Since the event, the supply of small guns (different types of pistols) to Karachi police personnel has been restricted, with 9mm or other small arms being handed to officers instead of Kalashnikovs.
This year, efforts have been made to purchase 7,000 9mm pistols. The Home Department approved the plan. Following clearance, a file was sent to the Sindh cabinet for exemption from SPPRA guidelines at the request of the Sindh IGP. SPPRA norms have also been exempted by the Sindh cabinet.
