The Khewra Salt Mines, found in Khewra, Punjab, Pakistan, are a well-known tourist spot. They hold the title of being Pakistan’s biggest and oldest salt mine and rank as the world’s second-largest. This mine’s history dates back to around 320 BC when it was discovered by Alexander the Great’s soldiers, mainly due to their horses licking the salty rocks.
You can locate these mines in the Pind Dadan Khan Tehsil of the Jhelum District, and they’re roughly 200 km away from both Islamabad and Lahore. To get there, you can take the M2 motorway and travel about 30 kilometers from the Lilla interchange toward Pind Dadan Khan on the Lilla road.
Situated at an elevation of about 945 feet above sea level, the mine stretches about 2,400 feet into the mountain from its entrance. Covering a vast area of 110 square kilometers, it’s an extensive underground mine.
