Three people have been sentenced to seven years in prison for their role in the kidnapping and blackmail of well-known playwright Khalilur Rehman Qamar. The verdict was delivered by Judge Arshad Javed of the Lahore Anti-Terrorism Court, who also decided to release several other suspects who were found not guilty.
The incident took place on July 15, 2024, when Qamar was tricked into meeting a woman named Amna Urooj. She had invited him under false pretenses, and once he arrived, she and her accomplices carried out the kidnapping. The group took his personal belongings and demanded a ransom in exchange for his release.
During the investigation and court proceedings, 17 different witnesses gave statements. These included Khalilur Rehman Qamar himself, as well as police officers and employees from a bank. Their testimonies helped build the case against the individuals involved.
Now that the trial has ended, the three people found guilty are facing prison time as punishment for their crimes. The case has drawn public attention because of Qamar’s high profile and the serious nature of the offense. It also highlights the importance of the legal process in ensuring justice is served.
