Titanic’s Band Keeps Rocking Music While Ship Sinking

“Nearer, My God, To Thee” was the final tune passengers on the Titanic listened to. The iconic scene shown in all the documentaries on the Titanic tragedy reflects that the musicians on board chose to stay on deck and uplift the spirits of people.

The musicians kept playing the hymn “Nearer, My God, To Thee” to end their last journey of life. Although none of them survived, they were heroes and are celebrated for their bravery. To honor the band, Daily Mirror’s front page on 20th April featured the musicians with the headline, “Bandsmen heroes of the sinking Titanic play ‘Nearer, My God, To Thee’ as the liner goes down to her doom”.

The eyewitnesses also confirmed that band kept playing the music however, some claim that a different song was played. Some say that ragtime and popular music were performed however, according to one of the passengers who managed to escape before the liner sank, Nearer, My God, was played.

Despite the certainty of the music being played, the heroic act has been given tremendous importance and is being romanticized in the movies.
