United Kingdom and Australia Formally Recognise Palestine as a State

Australia has officially recognised the State of Palestine, taking the step in coordination with the United Kingdom just before the upcoming UN General Assembly session.

The announcement is seen as a significant diplomatic move aimed at reviving hope for peace in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, together with Foreign Minister Penny Wong, explained that the recognition is part of efforts to restart momentum towards a two-state solution.

They emphasised that the process must begin with an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of captives held during the conflict.

The Australian government also made it clear that Hamas should play no role in the future governance of Palestine, underlining that any political solution must be based on stability and peaceful leadership.

In London, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed similar views, saying that the recognition of Palestinian statehood is not just a symbolic gesture but a necessary step to restore hope for peace in the region. He added that such recognition can encourage meaningful negotiations between both sides.

The move has put added pressure on Israel, which is already facing increasing diplomatic isolation as global calls for peace grow louder.

Reports suggest that France and several other nations may also recognise Palestine in the coming weeks, which could further reshape international dynamics around the conflict.

By joining hands, Australia and the UK have sent a strong signal that the international community is pushing for renewed efforts towards peace, justice, and coexistence in the region.
