Volkswagen is conducting a feasibility study on flying cars in China, the largest European car manufacturer said on Tuesday, joining a rising number of companies looking into future technology.
“Beyond the autonomous drive of the vertical mobility concept, the next step could be to take our mobility approach into the future, especially in the technically related Chinese market,” the German group said in a statement.
China is the largest car market in the world, which also accounts for the largest share of Volkswagen’s revenue.
The news comes as firms are rushing to build commercial “robo-taxis” from startups to other global carmakers, aiming to cash in on a market Morgan Stanley says could be worth $1.5 trillion by 2040.
