World’s First: Chinese Surgeon Performs Remote Robotic Surgery Across Continents

In an era of unequal distribution of medical resources globally, what can telemedicine offer us?

In an unprecedented achievement, Professor Zhang Xu led a groundbreaking remote surgery from Rome to Beijing.

Over a distance of 8,000 kilometers, he performed the live surgery at a conference in Italy, guiding robotic arms remotely via a surgical console to complete the delicate work of removing a lesion from the patient’s prostate.

The procedure demonstrated remarkable precision with a latency of just 135 milliseconds—well below the 200-millisecond standard for telesurgery.

“During today’s surgery, there was almost no delay, and it was almost the same as an on-site surgery,” Zhang added.
