According to the latest news from Taiwan, Xiaomi and Oppo are developing their own custom 5G chips, which could be ready by the end of 2021.
Unisoc, a Shanghai-based chipset manufacturer, is also developing SoCs that support next-generation connectivity.
Following Huawei’s supply of Kirin chips being cut, Xiaomi and Oppo are likely looking to diversify their supply.
The news comes after Xiaomi teased a new chip ahead of the launch of the Mi 11 Ultra. It’s an in-house imaging processor, not a handheld processor. It’s also the first one it’s made since Surge S1, the first in-house chipset, launched in 2017.
