YouTube in India bans short film on human rights violations in occupied Kashmir

In the recent law restricting freedom of expression, the Indian government persuaded YouTube to ban a short film that exposed human rights abuses in illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

“Kashmir Anthem” tells of enforced disappearances and fake encounters in the active region. This award-winning documentary premiered on May 12th.

Following legal action by the Indian government, the video streaming platform geo-blocked the short film for viewers in India. In a letter to the film’s producer, YouTube’s legal support team admitted that it had received a notice from the Indian government calling for the video to be blocked.
