2023 Declared Hottest Year ‘In More than 100,000 Years’

This year is on track to be the hottest in recorded history, according to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, Europe’s climate monitor.

November marked the sixth consecutive month of record-breaking temperatures, pushing the global average temperature for 2023 to be 1.46 degrees Celsius warmer than pre-industrial levels.

This surpasses the 2016 record, making 2023 the warmest year ever recorded. The announcement coincides with ongoing COP28 climate talks in Dubai, where negotiators are discussing the fate of fossil fuels and seeking an agreement for an “orderly and just” phase-out. The COP28 talks are scheduled until December 12.
