The federal government has approved directives for the launch of 5G trials in Gilgit-Baltistan, marking a significant step toward introducing next-generation internet services in the region. The decision will allow telecom operators to begin testing advanced 5G connectivity as part of broader efforts to modernize Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and improve communication services in remote areas.
Officials said the initiative is aimed at strengthening internet accessibility, enhancing digital connectivity, and accelerating technological development across Gilgit-Baltistan. Authorities believe the introduction of 5G technology could play a major role in improving public services, supporting online businesses, expanding digital education opportunities, and boosting communication networks in mountainous regions where connectivity challenges have long persisted.
According to government representatives, the move is also expected to positively impact the tourism sector by enabling faster and more reliable internet services for visitors and businesses operating in the area. Improved digital infrastructure could help hotels, travel operators, freelancers, and local entrepreneurs expand their services and connect more effectively with national and international markets.
The approval was announced by Federal Minister Amir Muqam, who described the initiative as an important milestone in bringing modern technology to underserved regions. Local authorities and regional stakeholders were also credited for supporting and facilitating the process, which has been under discussion for several months.
Officials further stated that the 5G trial phase could eventually pave the way for a formal 5G spectrum auction in Gilgit-Baltistan, aligning the region with Pakistan’s wider digital transformation agenda. Telecom companies are now expected to begin preparations for trial operations, network testing, and technical assessments in the coming months.
Experts believe the introduction of 5G services could significantly improve internet speeds, reduce communication delays, and create new opportunities in sectors such as education, healthcare, tourism, e-commerce, and digital entrepreneurship throughout the region.
