The Punjab government in Pakistan has granted permission to phase out Qingqi rickshaws in Lahore, citing increasing traffic congestion, accidents, and pollution as reasons.
Around 0.1 million rickshaw drivers may face unemployment due to the decision.
The provincial government plans to provide alternative means of livelihood for the affected drivers.
A recent report by the city’s environmental department attributed 80% of pollution in Lahore to Qingqis.
The Lahore Transport Company, responsible for the phase-out, cited safety concerns and traffic disruption as reasons behind the decision.
