On May 20, 2024, tens of thousands of Iranians gathered in Tehran to mourn the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, who tragically died in a helicopter crash. The crash also claimed the lives of his foreign minister and six others while they were en route to Tabriz.

Mourners filled the streets, many holding portraits of Raisi as they congregated at the University of Tehran. Here, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led the prayers in honor of Raisi, who was widely seen as a potential successor to Khamenei.

The emotional funeral procession started at the university and made its way to Enghelab Square. After the ceremonies in Tehran, plans were made to transport Raisi’s body to Mashhad for additional rites and burial. Mashhad is a city of significant importance, and Raisi’s final resting place there holds deep symbolic meaning for many Iranians.

In response to the tragedy, Ayatollah Khamenei declared five days of national mourning.
