The Peshawar Institute of Cardiology (PIC) was inaugurated by Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday, 16 December 2020. Up till now the building has been under renovation, and the Prime Minister formally opened it on Wednesday for patients.
PM Imran Khan found the completion of the facility a significant achievement and accomplishment for the province during the Institute’s inaugural ceremony and congratulated the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He also said that when in need, those who have not been able to afford proper cardiac health in the past will now have a place to go.
“After the cardiac centre at the Lady Reading Hospital had to be shut down following unsatisfactory results, there was a need for a specialized cardiac institution,” said Imran Khan. “It (Institute of Cardiology) would also prove to be a blessing for the people of the region just like Shaukat Khanum, which was opened in 2016 and served the entire region.”
Imran Khan established Shaukat Khanum Memorial, a cancer hospital and research centre in Peshawar too. Today, the current Prime Minister compared this Cardiology Institute to the memorial of Shaukat Khanum and said that this may prove as helpful to cancer patients as Shaukat Khanum has been to cardiovascular patients.
“Unfortunately, this Country’s ruling elite has never thought of the poor as they go abroad for their treatment,” the PM said. He said he did not want the poor to go to sub-par institutions only because they could not afford better and that the introduction of a health insurance system through the Sehat Insaf Cards was innovative and enabled individuals to access both public and private hospitals.
