2,557 Car Wash Stations in Punjab Notified, 159 Sealed for Failing to Install Water Recycling Systems

The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has taken strict action against car wash stations that failed to follow water-saving rules. Out of more than 2,500 stations inspected, 2,557 were served notices, and 159 were sealed because they did not install water recycling systems, which are now required by law.

This step is part of the government’s plan to save water during a time when drought conditions are affecting the region. Authorities are trying to reduce the misuse of water, especially in services like car washes that consume large amounts daily.

In February, the EPA had given all car wash stations a deadline to set up water recycling systems. Those that did not meet the deadline are now facing penalties. So far, 646 stations have installed the required systems and are following the rules.

The government has also imposed fines of more than Rs600,000 on those who did not comply. In addition to this, a province-wide ban has been put in place on setting up any new car wash stations until further notice.

To further protect water resources, the EPA has also banned people from washing their cars at home. This is to make sure every drop of water is used wisely and not wasted on non-essential activities.

The EPA says that these steps are important to protect Punjab’s limited water supply and encourage people and businesses to use water more responsibly. Authorities are continuing their inspections and will take more actions if needed to ensure full compliance.

This crackdown sends a strong message that protecting the environment and saving water are now top priorities for the province. More efforts and awareness campaigns are expected in the coming weeks to promote water conservation across all sectors.
