As part of a long-standing tradition, the administration of the Two Holy Mosques has raised the covering of the Kaaba, known as the Kiswah, by three meters above the ground. This step has been taken in preparation for the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage, when millions of Muslims from around the world visit the holy city of Makkah.
The Kiswah will remain in its raised position until the 15th of Dhul-Hijjah. This precaution is meant to protect the sacred cloth from being damaged due to the large number of pilgrims who gather around the Kaaba during this time. In the past, some pilgrims tried to touch or even cut small pieces from the Kiswah to keep as religious souvenirs. Although done out of devotion, such actions could cause wear and tear to the delicate fabric.
By lifting the Kiswah, the authorities are helping to preserve its condition and maintain the sanctity of the Kaaba. This thoughtful measure ensures that the holy site remains respected and protected during one of the busiest and most spiritually significant times of the Islamic year.
