Cambodia has joined the list of countries that want former US President Donald Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The Southeast Asian nation says Trump played a key role in ending recent deadly clashes with neighboring Thailand.
Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Sun Chanthol, confirmed that his government will officially put Trump’s name forward for the famous award. He praised Trump’s phone call last week, which pushed both sides to stop fighting and agree to peace talks in Malaysia.
The conflict, which broke out along the Thailand-Cambodia border, was the worst in more than ten years. The fighting lasted five days and forced over 300,000 people to leave their homes. At least 43 lives were lost before a ceasefire was finally reached.
Apart from his help to end the conflict, Cambodian officials also thanked Trump for easing trade tariffs that could have hurt the country’s major clothing and footwear industry. The reduced tax helped protect thousands of local jobs, according to Chanthol.
Earlier this year, Pakistan and Israel also said they would support Trump’s nomination for the peace prize, praising his efforts to help settle disputes in their regions.
With Cambodia’s backing, Trump’s name is likely to draw more global attention as the Nobel committee reviews candidates for one of the world’s most respected honors.
